DOES THE PROJECT HAVE TO BE UP AND RUNNING TO QUALIFY FOR FUNDING?

No, the X Prize is intended to help seed new ideas but may also be used to scale existing projects that need an infusion of money to grow, impact and/or reach.

WHO CAN APPLY? MORE SPECIFICALLY, CAN STUDENTS APPLY?

Anyone who works for the Lucia Mar Unified School District is eligible to apply. In fact, we encourage district employees of all positions and fields to submit a proposal. Students who attend a school within LMUSD are eligible to apply if they are sponsored by a district employee (e.g. teacher, principal, etc.).

HOW MANY PRIZES ARE THERE? IS IT POSSIBLE THE PRIZE MONEY WILL GO TO MULTIPLE PROJECTS, EACH RECEIVING A SMALLER AMOUNT?

For the 2018 - 2019 academic year, we are limiting the prize to one recipient for the full amount of $50,000. Our hope is that by offering a significant grant amount, applicants will be inspired to think big and outside the box.

WHAT CRITERIA WILL THE PRIZE COMMITTEE CONSIDER IN SELECTING ITS FINALISTS/WINNER?

The mission of Lucia Mar Foundation for Innovation is to engage, challenge, and inspire all of our children by partnering with the school district  to support educational innovation and excellence. The Foundation supports projects that in addition to being innovative will, if successful, be sustainable and promote 21st Century skills while fostering professional development within the district.

Lucia Mar Unified School District’s four key areas of focus include: (1) Student achievement, (2) Climate & culture, (3) Future Ready, and (4) Organizational Excellence.

Projects that support both LMFI’s mission and LMUSD’s four pillars will be given preference.

No, the Foundation will continue to consider funding for smaller projects throughout the academic year. To learn more about our Mini Grants program, please see our website for details or contact our Board Secretary, Sharon McDaniel at 8675309

DOES THIS MEAN THAT LMFI IS NO LONGER GIVING OUT SMALLER GRANTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR?

An emphatic NO! STEM and/or STEAM oriented projects are obviously welcome, but innovative projects in the arts, music, literature, foreign language or administrative projects that support LMFI/LMUSD mission are all encouraged. All subject areas will be given equal weight.

DOES THE PROJECT HAVE TO BE TECHNOLOGY ORIENTED?

LMFI will be happy to provide mentoring/guidance in preparing a budget proposal. We will also be co-hosting an online budget training with LMUSD to ensure budgets align with the district in October. Please check the website for updates on date and information.

WHAT DO I DO IF I HAVE NEVER PREPARED A BUDGET?

Inspired thinking and big, out-of-the-box ideas can fail in the real world. A high probability of success, as judged by the selection committee, will certainly play in the selection process but we all realize there are no guarantees. Go for it!

WHAT IF MY PROJECT FAILS?
